Big Chop? Transition? Now What?

Not up for debate, This is easily one of the biggest decision of a woman’s life. Your hair is damaged, brittle, and dry….are you just ready for a change?

You have two options. You can either:

Big chop- the process of cutting off all of the relaxed, damaged &/or chemical treated hair.

Transition-trimming your ends to gradually grow out your hair while retaining your length. (Note: this is not my photo. If you know of the original source, please email me so I can credit her)

While big chopping may sound scary, there are some upsides to it…. Depending on the length of your hair, cutting off your relaxed/damaged ends can leave you with a twa or longer. twa (teeny weeny Afros) are soooo cute 😫. And require less manipulation. Also, by doing this you’re left with your natural curl pattern/type. What a perfect time to test out products and styles.

If you decide to transition, yes you’re left with your length which is a plus but, the down side to this is that you’ll have to manipulate two different hair textures. Braid outs and flexi-rods will help blend the two You’ll also have to pay extra attention to the demarcation between damaged and natural. This is the weakest point of your hair.

Whichever you decide, it’s important to adapt healthy hair practices.

  • *avoid using sulfate free shampoos- they strip your hair of its natural oils. Leaving your hair dry.
  •  *deep conditioning
  • *moisturize daily/every other day depending on product and hair type.
  • *avoid heat
  • *avoid chemicals
  • *regular trims
  • *sleeping in a silk bonnet or on a silk pillow case
  • *low manipulation hairstyles

These are just a few tips that I’ve incorporated into my hair regime that help me not only promote the growth of my hair, but also maintain the health of it as well.

It’s all bout the big chop to the Tewa. I still rock my twa even tho my hair is past shoulder length. I like the low manipulation and the reaction I get when I blow it out. My shrinkage is not a game! Great read.

I had no idea about the sulfate free shampoos. I thought that was a good thing.

Yes ma’am sulfate shampoos strip your hair of its natural oils. I would only suggest using them 2xs a month at most to clarify your scalp
